Island Life

Today I wanted to talk a bit about island life and some of the brilliant things I want to do next on the Isles of Scilly!

For anyone who hasn’t heard about my island home, the Isles of Scilly is a group of islands 28 miles of the coast of Cornwall, UK. We get beautiful hot, sunny summer days which means we have palm trees and other tropical plants dotted around, but also spine tingling storms which whip through the islands and are truly spectacular!

There are a few things I want to do this year to make the most of living on these islands, a few experiences which are unique to just here!

A Tresco Staycation

I LOVE staying on the island of Tresco with my family, the holiday cottages offer panoramic views, cosy rooms and beautiful artwork from a curated collection. There’s a spa to enjoy and over the winter, it’s often so quiet that you have your own private pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna to enjoy. The shop sells gourmet goodies, the pub does top notch grub and the walks around the island are all too easy with a young family. I found my first cowrie shell before Christmas whilst I was beach combing and I hope to find another one on our next staycation!

A Meal at Star Castle Hotel

Yes, on St Mary’s there is a castle shaped like a star! and the food is meant to be fantastic – they’ve picked up quite a number of awards over the past few years. We are booked in for a meal soon and as I have never been, I absolutely cannot wait!

Dolphin and Basking Shark Spotting

A few years ago I was walking along the cliffs on St Mary’s and I saw a basking shark! It was one of those perfect moments that I’ll remember forever, I had no phone signal, no way of telling anyone else about this amazing find so I sat down on a rock and watched it swimming around right next to the cliffs.

These kinds of moments are talked about by every islander and holiday maker – dolphins regularly ride alongside the Scillonian as it brings people back and forth from the mainland and at the right time of year, tiny puffins can be spotted on boat trips between the islands.

Almost every time I hop on a boat, I see a seal dipping in and out of the water and you can even swim with them!

I would love to see some more dolphins this year and maybe a basking shark if one decides to visit…

Owning a Holiday Let

I am one of the lucky owners of a gorgeous holiday let on the island of St. Mary’s which my husband and our family completely renovated when we bought it in late 2015. I love hearing how much our guests love the islands and all the interesting things they’ve got up to!

We named our holiday let after the elusive shells that are scattered over the beaches on our islands, Cowrie. You can take a look at our holiday let here

Visit Scilly

I love talking about my island home and I’m sure I will blog a lot more about this beautiful place! If you want to find out more about Scilly, take a look here

    1. I hope you manage to get over! Sometimes Isles of Scilly travel do special offers, its worth signing up to their emails in case there’s an offer that suits you! And I promise that if you love the sea, beaches, are happy to get stuck in with wellies/sandals and beach combing buckets, it’s well worth it! 😊
